What Do I Do With THAT?

Glass Jars = Sprout Jars

You finished off the last of the salsa after you got the kids in bed, and now you’re wondering if you should toss the jar in the recycling bin, or save it for something else. Well, if you picked the latter, then here is a cool “something else” way to use it.

Have you ever plopped down four bucks for those little plastic containers of bean sprouts? Not any more! You can grow your own for pennies. Here’s how.

Step One
With a hammer and nail, carefully punch small holes in the lid of the glass jar. Keep the lid on the jar so that the lid does not bend out of shape.

Step Two
Place 2-3 tablespoons of beans in the jar, cover with room temperature water, and let it soak overnight.

Good beans and seeds for sprouting:

    Mung beans
    Lentil beans
    Alfalfa seeds
    Broccoli seeds
Step Three
Drain beans by tilting the jar upside down and place in a sunny windowsill.

Step Four
At least three times a day, give the beans a “drink” of water by covering them with room temperature water, screwing on the jar lid, and titling it upside down to drain. Within a few days, you will have a garden. After they have sprouted, go ahead and place them in the refrigerator to store.

Note: For smaller beans and seeds, such as broccoli, you may need to top the jar with cheesecloth adhered with a rubber band so the smaller seeds don’t slip through the holes in the jar lid.
