Family
Apple
Pickin' Time
The crisp fall air means crisp fall apples. I have
vivid memories of family trips to the North Carolina
mountains to enjoy the foliage. These outings always
included a trip to a roadside apple stand where we
would purchase bags of apples and at least a dozen
or so jars of homemade apple butter. Believe me, nothing
tastes better than homemade buttermilk biscuits with
a heaping spoonful of apple butter in the middle!
This fall, why not plan a family outing to an apple
orchard? Check out the website, www.pickyourown.org to find an orchard near you, and do forget to do some
pre-picking activities before you go. Try these on
for size:
• Read the book, “Apple Picking Time” by
Michele Slawson
• Learn about the science of apples and how they grow.
The book, “How do Apples Grow?” By Betsy
Maestro is a wonderful source for younger children.
• Learn geography by reading the book, “How
to Make an Apple Pie and See the World” by Marjorie
Priceman. Keep a world map posted, and let your child
locate the different regions discussed in the book.
• Learn all about John Chapman (otherwise known as
Johnny Appleseed). He’s a real man with an amazing
legacy!
When make your trip and load up on apples, don’t
forget to pick up a few jars of apple butter. When
you pull those hot buttermilk biscuits out of the oven
on a cool, crisp fall morning, you’ll be glad
you did.
